On my most recent trip to visit Dike Hadsell (her son), I brought back all the slides left at Helene’s, along with a big box that Melissa Waters (her granddaughter) had to digitize any images that would help maintain the Hadsell legacy. (Winning in Life 2024 Road Trip)
Some were marked, some faded, some warped, and some dusty. Not all were kept in an orderly fashion, so figuring out who was in the images or where the pictures were taken wasn’t always apparent.
I began by looking at them through a sunny window with my grandfather’s magnifying glass. Then, I bought a vintage auto-slide viewer on Facebook Marketplace. It worked until the bulb burnt out, and the Amazon replacements didn’t. Then I realized the defusing photo lights I use to livestream were perfect. I held up each slide and peered through the magnifying glass, and I could easily choose which ones to digitize.
I felt as if I was traveling through time.
There were more landscapes than people. Some places I knew, and many I wanted to visit. It was magical—the clothes, the cars, the vistas. I felt like Dan James Rodo of Shot & Forgot.
These are the first four of about 100. (They were a digitization test.) A photo album page has been created and will be added to as more pictures are scanned/found. HADSELL PHOTOS
